J. Cole Revives Hip-Hop Print With The Fall-Off Magazine

At a time when most music coverage lives behind a screen, J. Cole is pushing something back into print. The Fall-Off Magazine arrives as a 144-page limited-run publication framed by Cole as an “homage to the rich tradition of Hip-Hop print journalism,” and its scope makes clear he is treating the format as more than a souvenir tied to an album cycle.

Announced on Wednesday (July 8), the magazine pulls together original reporting, photography and design from more than 60 creatives, tracing hip-hop’s evolution through a deliberately old-school lens. The cover teases interviews with J.I.D, GloRilla, Larry June and Lauryn Hill, alongside cover star Cole himself. It also includes “re-reviews” of debut albums by rap legends, a detail that nods to the genre’s history without flattening it into nostalgia.

In a statement, Editor-In-Chief Bonsu Thompson laid out the project’s intent in blunt, expansive terms:

“Like all essential creative by and for a culture, this collector’s edition arrives when most needed by its audience. Hip-Hop journalism has somehow expanded, diversified, atrophied and become amorphous all at once. So my aim was to deploy storytelling and the humanization of star power to educate the world on how Godly the craftsmen and innovation behind Hip-Hop commerce were, are and will forever be. No wifi needed.”

The magazine lands just before Cole’s Fall-Off World Tour, which begins in his home state of North Carolina on July 11 and runs through December, ending in South Africa. The tour supports his seventh and final studio album, The Fall-Off, which arrived in February.
