Tory Lanez has sued the California Department of Corrections for $100 million, alleging negligence after being stabbed 16 times by a violent inmate in May 2025. The suit also claims the prison seized his unpublished lyrics and attorney correspondence.

Rapper‑turned‑incarcerated celebrity Daystar Peterson, known professionally as Tory Lanez, has lodged a $100 million civil suit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). The complaint, filed on April 14 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, accuses prison officials of negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, privacy violations and conversion of property.
The lawsuit stems from a May 12, 2025 assault at the Tehachapi State Prison where Lanez was stabbed sixteen times by inmate Santino Casio, a lifer serving sentences for second‑degree murder and attempted murder. According to the filing, correctional officers and the warden failed to keep Lanez apart from a prisoner with a documented history of violent offenses, including a 2008 assault with a deadly weapon and a 2018 weapons‑manufacturing charge.
Lanez, who is serving a ten‑year term after a 2022 conviction for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, suffered wounds to his back, torso, head and face, along with two collapsed lungs. He was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition before being transferred to the California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo County.
Beyond medical damages, the filing alleges that CDCR seized his unpublished songbooks, lyric sheets and attorney correspondence, items the rapper claims hold future commercial value. He is seeking a jury trial and damages to cover medical expenses, pain and suffering, permanent scarring, lasting lung injury and lost earning potential.
XXL reached out to Lanez’s counsel and the CDCR for comment; no response was received at press time.
