Drake Is Already Back in the Studio After His Three-Album Run
Drake was photographed in a home studio less than three months after releasing Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour.
Drake has barely had time to let his three-album rollout settle before resurfacing in the studio. On Sunday, August 2, a photo posted to social media showed the Toronto artist inside a home setup, though there was no caption or added context to explain what he was working on.
The image arrives less than three months after Drake released Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour as a bundled three-album drop just before summer. The gamble paid off at chart level in a way few artists could even attempt: the projects debuted at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 on the Billboard 200, making Drake the first artist to occupy the chart’s top three spots at once since the list began publishing weekly in March 1956.
It also pushed him into another tier of chart history. The release brought his total to 15 No. 1 albums, moving him past Jay-Z’s record of 14 and leaving him tied with Taylor Swift for the most No. 1 albums among solo artists. Only The Beatles remain ahead of him overall, with 19 No. 1 albums.
Elsewhere on the singles side, the Iceman track “Janice STFU” opened at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of May 26, giving Drake another line in a record book that already has plenty of his name in it. That entry also saw him break Michael Jackson’s mark for the most No. 1 hits by a male solo artist.
In a recent conversation with XXL, Swae Lee weighed in on the three-album release and didn’t try to downplay its impact. “For [an artist] as big as Drake, that was smart as f**k. That was hard,” he said. “And I don’t really think nobody did that before that sh*t. And when you that caliber artist, these people [are] really fans of you. I don’t think a true fan is not going to say anything is too much music. That’s a feast for you. Imagine if that was food. You getting three f**king courses at a restaurant you love. Drake is a restaurant they love. They not going to turn it down, all this music. If I was a fan of somebody, I would love that.”
For now, the only concrete sign is that studio photo. Still, for an artist who just turned a three-album burst into another stack of chart records, a quick return to work hardly feels surprising.
