Fenix Flexin Walks Back ‘Rubberz’ Denial, Says AI Was Part of the Process
Fenix Flexin says AI was involved in “Rubberz” after months of denying it shaped the song’s recording process.
By the time “RUBBERZ” climbed to No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100, the conversation around Fenix Flexin’s viral track had already moved far beyond the song itself. The Shoreline Mafia rapper had spent months pushing back on suggestions that AI helped shape it, only to now acknowledge that the technology was involved after all.
On Friday, Aug. 7, Fenix addressed the issue in an Instagram comment after a fan pointed to Tyga’s recent admission that he used AI on his new 1980s-inspired album, $tarface. His response drew a line between AI and the recording process, insisting he had never denied using the technology altogether.
“Never said I didn’t use AI, I said it had nun to do w recording process,” he wrote. “I didn’t even know what da app was till we mixed it and erybody started commenting. Ain’t nothing wrong w using new technology as a tool. Keep up w the times or get left behind.”
That clarification is a shift from the stance he took when the song first began making noise. Back in June, after listeners started suggesting the track had been generated with AI, Fenix dismissed that idea and said he cut it like any of his other records.
“No sirrrrrrr, recorded same as all music I do,” he replied on Instagram. “Only difference is auto tune reverb and me using my fake UK accent lol.”
The speculation only grew louder on July 30, when producer Medasin posted a video claiming Fenix had used Treblo, the music generation app formerly known as Sonauto AI, to make the song. The track’s vocals, which sound unlike much of Fenix’s earlier work, and its 1980s synth-pop framing fed the debate about how much of “RUBBERZ” was shaped by AI.
Elsewhere, the record’s unusual presentation has kept it in the middle of a broader argument the music world keeps circling: where creative tool ends and creative authorship begins. For now, Fenix is saying the technology was there, even if he’s drawing a distinction about when and how it entered the process.
