YoungBoy Never Broke Again says he has one or two albums left, one final tour and no plans to move back to the U.S.
For an artist who’s spent so much of his career moving under pressure, YoungBoy Never Broke Again sounded strikingly certain about what comes next: not much, at least in terms of music. In a new conversation with Funny Marco, the Baton Rouge rapper said he believes he has only one or two albums left in him, and added that he never plans to live in the United States again.
The full episode of Open Thoughts with Funny Marco arrived on Tuesday, Aug. 11, and YB used the appearance to make a few unusually blunt declarations. Filmed from Korea, where he’s been staying with his family, the rapper said the years of legal problems, prison time and house arrest have already closed the door on any return home. When Marco asked whether he’d ever consider moving back to the States, YB answered without hesitation:
“Never in life. No,”
He’s been abroad for months now, spending time in Beijing, Norway, Belgium, France and South Korea. The interview framed that movement less like a victory lap than a kind of reset, though YB didn’t dress it up that way. He spoke as someone who’s already made his decision.
His exit plan from music was just as stark. Asked how many albums he has left, he replied,
“One or two,”
and then went even further on touring:
“One for sure. I’ll go on tour one more time throughout my whole life and that’s it.”
It’s a surprising line from an artist who has stayed remarkably prolific even by rap’s overproducing standards. YB has already put out two projects this year, January’s Slime Cry and June’s ML2, alongside a run of notable guest spots. He’s also had a different kind of success with American YoungBoy, the documentary that pulled in more than $1 million at the box office in its first week.
Elsewhere in the interview, though, he made clear that music isn’t where his mind is right now. YB said his doctor told him his heart is swollen, and the comment landed with the kind of uneasy plainness that tends to follow him around.
“The doctor told me that the left side of my heart is swollen,” YB says. “That explains the music, though, right?”
For now, he sounds like someone already writing the last stretch of his own story, even if the final chapters still appear to be unwritten.
